A Remarkable Journey to Restoration and Recognition
It has been a long and rewarding journey for the Friends of South Cliff Gardens, but today, the
stunning transformation of this historic landscape stands as a testament to community dedication
and collaboration. What began as an ambitious imitative in 2006 has culminated in international
recognition, with South Cliff Gardens being nominated for the prestigious European Garden
Heritage Network (EGHN) award.
When the Friends of South Cliff Gardens group was established, it was clear that the 52-acre
cliffside garden—over a century old—was in desperate need of restoration. The Friends group
supported Scarborough Council’s application to secure funding, address key issues, and raise
community awareness about this treasured local asset.
Reflecting on the journey, Adrian Perry for the Friends of South Cliff Gardens
remarked, “When we started in 2006, we could never have imagined seeing
the gardens flourish as they do today. The quality of work is outstanding,
ensuring that our beloved gardens will remain a source of pride and joy for
years to come.” This achievement has now been further validated on an
international stage. South Cliff Gardens has been nominated for the esteemed
EGHN award in the category of “Management or Development of a Historic
Park or Garden.” It stands alongside two more nominees: Promenades de
Reims (France) and Raby Castle and the Rising. The award ceremony will take place on June 27,
2025, in the gardens of Schloss Dyck in Jüchen, near Düsseldorf, Germany.
“To have Scarborough’s South Cliff Gardens recognized in such
distinguished international company is an extraordinary achievement.”

Who we are
The Friends of South Cliff Gardens is a community group which was established in June 2006 to help look after the public gardens between Filey Road, Ramshill Road, Holbeck Road and the sea.
Our aims include protecting and enhancing the natural beauty, wildlife, flora and fauna, historical interest and facilities of the Gardens. Promoting and raising funds to improve the Gardens and encourage their use and organising social and educational events &activities in the Gardens.
The volunteer gardeners meet each Wednesday at 10AM on Esplanade near the Rose Garden. We usually work until 12 noon. Some garden tools are supplied, but most of the group bring their own
equipment including their own gloves.
We welcome the support of all members whether active or passive. As a Friend you will enjoy the following benefits:
Members receive a regular Newsletter and advance knowledge of events in the Gardens.
Members are invited to the Annual General Meeting.

The Friends group help to raise money for things like the Christmas tree which is a beacon of light during the dark December days. Or other things such as the outdoor Table Tennis table.
