About PBS Construction (North East) Limited
We are a local construction company located in nearby Hull. We currently employ 120 people with the company having grown steadily since being formed in 1988 by current chairman, Pete Smurthwaite. As a business, we have a portfolio of similar schemes having recently completed Public Realm and improvement contracts in Bridlington with a value of £7.42m.
We’re also currently completing a second phase of Public Realm works on the Promenade in Cleethorpes which will bring a value of works completed there to £3.8m. Our experience of completing those contracts gives us a knowledge of working in coastal towns and the associated challenges.
We are looking forward to delivering this scheme for the town of Scarborough and the local community.
Our Chairman, Peter Smurthwaite, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this very prestigious contract in these difficult times which gives us certainty of work for our staff for the next 12 months.”
“As a company we want to engage with the local community and there will be opportunities for local businesses and people to be involved with the scheme. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Scarborough Borough Council for awarding this contract to our company.”

Considerate Constructors Scheme
This project has been registered under the Considerate Constructors Scheme, which means that we will agree to abide by the Code of Considerate best practice beyond statutory requirements. Alongside this we have registered with The Considerate Constructors Scheme who are working with the Lighthouse Club, the Construction Industry Charity to promote the Construction Industry Helpline. The Construction Industry Helpline operates 24/7 and provides practical support on occupational health and mental wellbeing, access to support on legal, tax and debt management matters and also grants emergency financial aid to construction families in crisis.
Drop-in Sessions
We are planning to host monthly drop-in sessions. The times, dates and locations of these sessions are yet to be confirmed and we will provide an update in our next monthly newsletter. If anyone has any queries regarding the project they will be welcome to come along and chat with our Site Managers, Mark Goodwin and Alan Clarke.
